White Mountain Mandatory Math

Paws Along the Trail with Mandatory Math

White Mountain is a truly beautiful checkpoint.  Two veterinarians, a trail volunteer, and I flew into the checkpoint on a plane with nine seats.  It reminded me more of a city bus as we landed in Shaktoolik, Koyuk, Golovin, and White Mountain.  People got on and off at every stop!  Flying over the Bering Seat Coast showed some open water, but mostly huge sheets of ice.

White Mountain is located in the hills beside the Fish River.  The sunrise overlooking Anna Berington’s and Michi Konno’s teams was beautiful last night.

When mushers come into White Mountain, they are required to take an 8 hour rest.  A lot of math is used here to make sure the mushers leave on time  We have made a table on the chalkboard in the room.  When a musher arrives, the checker writes down the time and how many dogs he/she has.  That information goes ont the chalkboard along with the time the musher may leave, which means we add 8 hours to it.  Times are written in military time.  Military time is the same until 12:00 noon.  After that, 1:00 PM is 13:00, 2:00 PM is 14:00, and so on.

I have attached a table that looks just like our chalkboard in White Mountain.  Can you be a communications volunteer and fill in the leave times for our mushers?  Remember to write it in military time.
