Legendary Iditarod Musher Hospitalized

The "Shishmaref Cannonball" Suffers a Stroke

by Chas St.George

11/16/2006

Legendary Iditarod musher Herbie Nayokpuk is being hospitalized at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage Alaska, after suffering what family members described as a stroke. The 77 year old Nayokpuk arrived at Alaska Native Hospital on Monday evening (November 13, 2006) after being med evacuated from his home on Shishmaref Alaska. Family members from around the state are at the “Shishmaref Cannonball’s” side. They say his condition is critical but stable.

The incident occurred late Monday afternoon, and according to the family, a Norton Sound Physician was on the island and was able to care for him at a very critical time.

Herbie Nayokpuk is one of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race’s greatest treasures. The Iditarod Trail Committee’s thoughts and prayers are with both Herbie and Elizabeth and their entire family.
