The Shishmaref Cannonball, Herbie Nayokpuk, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 at the age of 77. Herbie leaves behind his beloved wife, Elizabeth, his family, and his extended family of IDITAROD mushers, volunteers and race fans. The “Cannonball” (and his big broad smile) will always be in our hearts.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE for Herbie Nayokpuk is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday (December 6, 2006) at the Anchorage Baptist Temple. Another service is scheduled Thursday (December 7, 2006) in Nome, at the end of the Iditarod Trail. A funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m., weather permitting, Friday December 8, 2006) in Shishmaref.
