IDITAROD XXXVI Musher Lance Mackey (Bib # 6) was the first to arrive in the town of McGrath along the banks of the Kuskokwim River. The four time Yukon Quest Champion, and last year’s Iditarod Champion arrived at 10:46 this evening (Tuesday),with 15 dogs. He was greeted by representatives of PENAIR, one of the Iditarod Trail Committee’s proud sponsors of “The Last Great Race to Nome.” Danny Seybert, PENAIR’s Chief Operating Officer, presented the prestigious PENAIR SPIRIT OF ALASKA AWARD to Mackey at a very brief awards ceremony at the McGrath Checkpoint. The award is a beautiful original “spirit mask” especially created for this event by Bristol Bay artist Orville Lind. In addition, Mackey received a $500 credit toward travel or freight shipment. The PENAIR SPIRIT OF ALASKA AWARD will be presented to Lance Mackey again on March 16th in Nome at the Mushers Awards Banquet.
