ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - (March 10, 2009)

IDITAROD XXXVII Musher Aaron Burmeister (Bib # 56) was the first to arrive in the town of McGrath along the banks of the Kuskokwim River late this evening (Tuesday).  The Nenana, Alaska musher arrived at 11:36 with 14 dogs. He was greeted by representatives of PENAIR, one of the Iditarod Trail Committee's proud sponsors of "The Last Great Race".

Danny Seybert, PENAIR's Chief Operating Officer, presented the prestigious PENAIR SPIRIT OF ALASKA AWARD to Burmeister at a very brief award ceremony at the McGrath Checkpoint.

The award is an original "spirit mask" especially created for this event by Bristol Bay artist Orville Lind.  In addition, Burmeister received a $500 credit toward travel or freight shipment.

The PENAIR SPIRIT OF ALASKA AWARD will be presented to Aaron Burmeister again on March 22nd in Nome at the Mushers' Award Banquet.

Burmeister didn't waste any time in McGrath.  He headed for Takotna shortly after the presentation.
