Biography
Melanie Shirilla, 32, was born in Minnesota. She began mushing in 1994 and began running Doug Swingley’s yearlings in 2000. Since then she has competed competitively in races in the lower 48. She and Doug were married in Nome following Doug’s finish of the 2002 Iditarod. She says she enjoys living in the mountains of Montana with their many dogs and horses. “I will be running a team of yearlings in this Iditarod and can’t wait to see them mature and change on the trail.” She says when she is not running sled dogs she is usually out on her horse exploring the trails.
