Trent Herbst, 38, was born and raised in Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of LaCrosse with a major in Elementary Education. Before moving to Alaska in 2005 "to run the Iditarod," Trent taught school in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Germany and Switzerland. He entered his first race in 2005. After the 2006 Iditarod, he moved to Idaho to accept a teaching position. He is now teaching fourth grade in Ketchum, Idaho. He is currently running for the National Lake Rescue Institute (NLRI) in Uganda, Africa, to support educational training and environmental protection for search and rescue operations in East African communities. In 2009, he will be running a team of dogs from Ed and Tasha Stielstra's Natures Kennel. Trent is a member of PRIDE, Lake Rescue Uganda and Camus County Dog Mushers. He says he enjoys outdoor pursuits and teaching. He and his wife, Candida, are the parents of Kal, age 6. The family has a summer cabin in Homer, Alaska.
