Iditarod Musher Profile

Sven Haltmann, 31, came to Alaska was born and raised in Switzerland. He came to Alaska in 2001 to look for new challenges and opportunities. He quickly fell in love with the sport of mushing and Alaska's beautiful wilderness. It became very clear that Alaska was the perfect playground for him and he decided to stay. Sven absolutely loves the outdoors and all animals. He feels very fortunate to have the support of his wife and many friends, is in good health and can fulfill his dreams. He says, "I sure don't take that for granted and feel very blessed." He grew up in Appenzell, a little Swiss village, in the foothills of a popular mountain ranged. Surrounded by farm animals all of his teenage days, he developed a strong bond with animals, especially dogs. He finished the 2008 Iditarod in 36^th place and is ready to take it to the next level in 2009. Iditarod success is a long process and takes patience and time. 2008 taught him valuable lessons and prepared his team for more challenging tasks. Sven is married to Andrea, a veterinarian in Big Lake. Her knowledge and support are a very important part of the team. Whenever Sven wants to fly away with his enthusiasm, Andrea usually brings him back to the ground to look at things in a more realistic way. Together they make a great team. Sven works with Pioneer Hotshots during the summer months. Fighting fires all over the state and the Lower 48 is what keeps his blood pumping and his adrenaline going. This crew is a big part of who he has become since living in Alaska. A very young energetic crew, these guys are his family during the summer months. When Sven is gone the kennel staff is training the dogs all summer long. Sven loves Alaska and America, a place where dreams still come true!!! He lists his hobbies as running and reading.
