Ramey Smyth, 34, was born in Alaska, the son of Iditarod veterans Bud Smyth and the late Lolly Medley. He says he's been mushing since he was a young child. He ran the Jr. Iditarod three or four times and ran his first Iditarod in 1994 and has only skipped one year since. He is a log builder and also works as a hunting guide. He says his hobbies are dogs, hunting, building homes and reading history. Ramey says, "I love Alaska, love my family, love dogs, and am racing to compete at the highest level of mushing (Iditarod). I love a challenge and would hope people would abstain from alcohol and cigarettes. My mother died from cancer caused by smoking." Ramey and his wife, Rebecca, are the parents of Ava, 2 ½.
