Some of the mushers from out of the Anchorage/Valley area are in need of housing for themselves & their dogs during the week prior to the race start. Also, volunteers come in from out of state & would like to stay with other volunteers. If you check “yes” you will not be under any obligation. You will be contacted & given info about the individual before you’re asked to make a commitment.

Volunteer Registration Desk 2/26 - 3/10
If you are interested in meeting volunteers and fans from all over the world, this is the job for you. Ask yourself these few questions, and if the answer is yes to them all, please volunteer to work this position. Are you comfortable working with a spreadsheet on the computer? Are you comfortable working with a laptop computer? (Will have an external keyboard and mouse.) At times there will be large crowds checking in at once. Are you an organized person who can keep things in order during these rush periods? If you answered yes, this job is for you! Thursday and Friday of Race week will be the busiest.
Moving Furniture at the Millennium — Out (Wed 2/24, 10am-4pm) and Back In (Wed 3/24 10am-1pm)

 Musher Parking - Early Saturday Morning, Sat 3/6 - 5 am to approx 10am
Provide early morning security and assist Mushers in locating their staging/parking place.
 Trail Guard - Public Relations/Safety, Sat 3/6
Positions available from 4th Ave to BLM Headquarters. Duties include keeping trail clear of pedestrians; adding snow back to the trail at roadway/trail crossings.
 Security - Public Relations/Safety, Fri 3/5 & Sat 3/6
Duties include keeping public separate from race participants, staffing public crossings of staging areas and keeping the trail open within the staging area.
 VIP Liaisons – Public Relations, Fri 3/5 & Sat 3/6 (for special events)
Assist Idita-Riders and family members in locating their mushers. Provide escort to Public Officials and Honored Guests.
 Dog Handlers, Sat 3/6 - Special training & certificate required
Volunteers should be physically fit! Volunteers will assist mushers from parking space to Starting Line on 4th Ave.

 End of Anchorage Start at the BLM
BLM Volunteers needed in multiple positions: Dog Handlers, Security, Trail Guard and VIP Liaison. Volunteers should be familiar with Anchorage and have transportation.
Willow Re-start, Sunday 3/7

 Volunteer Check-in, Sun 3/7
Check in and registration of volunteers as they arrive for duty. Includes verifying registration status, dispensing armbands, and helping volunteers locate their assigned position.
 Load Truck, Sat 3/6 - Wasilla ITC       Unload Truck, Mon 3/8 - Wasilla ITC
Involves loading all equipment and fencing at the storage facility and transporting it by truck to Willow and unloading it. This takes places on Saturday. The equipment is then reloaded on to the truck on Sunday evening after the event and transported back to Wasilla, where it will be unloaded and returned to storage Monday morning.
 Early Morning Setup/Musher Parking, Sun 3/7
Provide early morning security and assist Mushers in locating their staging/parking place. Includes assembly of fencing to secure staging and chute areas as well and set up of other equipment required at the event. These activities may occur on the day before or the early morning of the Start and/or Restart.

        Check here if you have any physical restrictions that would prevent you from walking through potentially deep snow or impair your ability to lift/carry heavy objects
 Trail Guard, Sun 3/7
A trail guard is an individual that would be placed at a street or road crossing to control vehicle as well as pedestrian traffic. These locations typically are somewhat further away from the re-start line. The goal being to ensure the safety of both dog teams as well as spectators. You might have to walk thru deep snow or lift and carry heavy objects or be required to add snow back to the trail at crossings that are heavily trafficked.
 Security - Public Relations/Safety, Sun 3/7
Typically positioned at public crossings in and around the chute and staging area. Their goal is to keep the public separated from the competitors, controlling the flow of spectators passing through those crossings, maintaining the integrity of fencing, and keeping the trail cleared for the competitors.

Veterinarian Assistants & Clerical Assistants
 Vet Technician for pre-race testing (February to early March) - Must be licensed
 Tech Assistants (February to early March). Limited positions. This position is clerical, doing the paper work while the technicians work.
Trail Positions
Trail positions are limited and most often held by those who have previously volunteered. These positions require hard work and long hours (don’t expect a good night’s sleep while you’re on the trail-it won’t happen) and you should not volunteer for a trail position if you’re tied to a particular time frame. Most trail positions are taken by people who actually live on the trail. The best way to be considered for a trail position is to volunteer in other areas for a couple of years.
