New Beginnings

Sled Dog Ed

Dear Teachers,

Welcome back to another school year!  I am sure you have been busy preparing your classroom for all of the new students.  Your students will become your team for the upcoming academic year…mush forward.

Speaking of new team members…our kennel just added a new member to the roster, Topaz! She is getting used to the routines and loving her new surroundings.  We had to spend time showing her where things were, where to get her food and water, and most importantly, the boundaries of our home.  With a little bit of guidance, she has adapted well. You will do the same for your students as you acclimate them to your classroom these first few weeks.

Topaz – the newest addition to our home!

At the beginning of the year most teachers spend time team building with their students.  Take a look at 2019 Teacher on the Trail™ Brian Hickox’s lesson, “Position Your Students for Success”, for great ideas on the various positions of dogs on a team and how that relates to your classroom.

Also, many of you have known in the past that the maximum number of dogs able to start the Iditarod Sled Dog Race was 16.  The rules have changed…now the maximum number to start with is 14!  Please check out the 2019 Iditarod Sled Dog Race Rules for that change as well as other changes that have been made.  This is a good place to familiarize yourself with the race as well if you are new to following it and using it in your curricula or if you just need a refresher.

Keep an eye out for additional articles from Sled Dog Ed this year on how to use the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in your classroom.  Have a great beginning to a new school year!!
