Libby here!

Mushers wear bibs when they start and end the race.   Each bib has a number on it and the bib numbers tell the starting order of the musher.

The Iditarod Mushers get their bib numbers at the Musher Drawing Banquet which is held on the Thursday before the start of the race each year.  This year, the banquet is on March 3.

Bib number 1 is the honorary musher.  Each year, the Iditarod honors someone as a special thank you to the person for doing something for the race.

This year’s honorary musher is Tom Busch.  Tom worked with KNOM radio for 30 years.  Tom covered the very first Iditarod in 1973.

Tom’s wife will be riding in the sled at the start of the race because Tom passed away in November of 2010.
