Libby Here!
It’s happening! It’s happening! I’m spinning and spinning in a circle so fast it looks like I’ll catch my tail!
What’s happening? The Jr. Iditarod! That’s what!
Each year on the weekend before the start of the Iditarod, the Jr. Iditarod is held. This year, the race starts on February 23.
The Jr. Iditarod is a race that is for kids who are ages 14 – 17. The Jr. Mushers race from their starting point which is usually in Wasilla or Willow, to Yentna Station and back. When the mushers are at Yentna Station, they have a required rest stop of 10 hours. The mushes race between 7 and 10 dogs but must finish the race with at least 5 dogs pulling the sled. Just like the adult Iditarod Mushers, the Jr. racers must follow rules and have mandatory gear in their sleds.
You can learn all about the Jr. Iditarod by visiting their website. Click here! Meet the mushes, read the rules, check out the trail, look at some pictures but most importantly, spin, spin, spin, spin, spin in circles as you cheer the mushers during the race! Spin? What am I thinking? That’s how I cheer on the racers! Sorry! You can cheer in your own way!
Just spinning some De’tails’!
