What’s a Bib?

DSC_0109Libby here!

Do you know what a bib is?  Sure you do, it is something you put on little humans so the food they eat doesn’t dribble on their shirt.  Did you ever wear a bib?

But in the mushing world, a bib is something different.

A bib is what a musher wears to show the musher’s starting order.

Mushers start a race according to their bib numbers.  The lowest number stars first.  The highest number starts last.

In Iditarod, the first musher to start the race is the musher wearing bib number 2.

Bib number 1 is saved for the honorary musher.  An honorary musher is chosen each year.
