This morning, the Jr. Iditarod mushers arrived at Knik Lake early in the morning in order to pack their sleds and prepare to make their way to Yentna Station. The temperatures were brisk, and the sky was blue and incredibly clear. Yentna serves as the halfway point of the race and it is also the checkpoint where mushers take their mandatory 10-hour layover.
As the mushers were packing theirs sleds and harnessing their dogs, it was evident that each of them was mentally prepared to head out onto the trail. Some mushers were smiling and laughing, some were posing for photos with friends and family, some were being interviewed by the local media, and others had a demeanor and appearance that indicated they were “all business.” The dogs, too, were excited to head out onto the trail; they excitingly barked, jumped, and yelped knowing that is was soon time to leave.
As mushers and handlers made their way to the starting line, fans lined the chute and were cheering and clapping for the mushers before they departed. It was exciting for all who were in attendance. Prior to heading out, each musher made it a point to individually embrace every dog and let them know that they were loved and appreciated.
It is awesome to see such a young group of teenagers who are so determined, driven, energized and goal-oriented. Make sure to follow the Jr. Iditarod mushers as they continue to make their way to the finish line at Willow Community Center.
