Mushing with Math and the Jr. Iditarod

Anna Stephan, 2019 Jr. Iditarod Champion, on the trail

Are you in need of a math lesson that will engage your students and allow them to make a real-life connection? Integrate the Jr. Iditarod into your classroom and provide your students with opportunities to learn math concepts while using relevant and timely data. Just like the Iditarod mushers, the Jr. mushers also have records of when they arrived and departed from every checkpoint; additionally, each musher also has data that summarizes their average rate of speed between checkpoints.

Use this math lesson with your students and have them summarize the mushers’ race statistics from the 2019 Jr. Iditarod. Students will be challenged to find the mean, median, mode, and range of particular data sets. Additionally, students will conduct their own research and summarize the data that they find from this year’s race archives. This will be great practice for students and it will enable them to successfully summarize sets of data from the upcoming 2019 Iditarod!
