Eye on the Trail: Building the Trail on 4th Avenue

Snow Brought in by Dump Trucks

No parking signs have been posted for 24 hours along 4th Avenue as well as crossing streets in downtown Anchorage.  They weren’t kidding!  At 6 pm this evening tow trucks were hauling away the violator’s vehicles.  Snow fence was being erected along the edge of the sidewalks.  Then the snow came, not naturally but by the truck load.  Dump trucks deposited their white cargo on the streets and soon the grader followed to craft the trail down the middle of the street.  All in all, it takes 145 truck loads of snow to the city streets into a trail for the Ceremonial Start of Iditarod.  The last load of snow will be dumped around mid-night and the graders will continue working until 3 am to level the mounds into and create the trail.
