Those of you following the tracker closely most likely noticed that Lance Mackey turned around after leaving his campout spot. That is surprising to see. When I stopped to chat with him there was no indication that something was wrong. Or at least Lance did not let it on. The only thing he was a little bit bummed out about was that some of his dogs were having harness rub, from some different harnesses he tried earlier in the race. I stayed with him for about 20 minutes, watched him feed the team and all dogs eagerly ate their meal. No indication of a tired team. He did mention that he had planned to run all the way, but the opted to camp out, when the temperatures got up. Lance actually at the time seemed happy about as he put it ” being in the race, and not just a number on the stat sheet “. All of his dogs are 3 years old, and thus entering prime age.
When I caught up with Lance, he was past the Carlson Crossing shelter cabin. From looking at the tracker, he went back to that cabin ( where Jeff King was resting before ).
