Yukon River–Galena to Nulato

Traveling on the Yukon River has been really nice. There is a slight breeze out there from the north, but luckily the snow is really hard packed. There is not much loose snow to blow around and the going for the mushers is good. At the mouth of the Koyukuk River a group of snowmachiners from the village was watching the teams go by. All 3 teams were moving along nicely. Aliy being her usual Spiderwoman with both skipoles out. Sonny was just sitting on his cooler seat and enjoying the afternoon sun. Martin did also not seem to help his dogs. When he passed me I asked how come his son Rohn is flying down the trail in an airplane, while he has to ride the runner. As always Martin has a great humou,r “Well, he is flying along so he can do the nightshift.”

The checkpoint in Nulato is getting ready for the mushers’ arrival. If Martin gets here about 6 p.m. they are almost 12 hrs faster than they were in 2012. That is a lot of time, a full run and rest cycle. It shows how much mushing and training is evolving, but also how fast the trail is this year.

The ” Buser bullets ” will be the first ones to get here….
