Iditarod Expedition Program Opens a New Way to Experience The Last Great Race®
Experienced Adventurers Invited to Join a Unique Journey Across Alaska’s Legendary Iditarod Trail

Following a successful inaugural year in 2026, the Iditarod Trail Committee is expanding awareness of its innovative Expedition Musher Program, a one-of-a-kind opportunity that allows experienced adventurers to travel the historic Iditarod Trail as part of The Last Great Race®.

Created to welcome individuals seeking a world-class wilderness expedition rather than a traditional race experience, the Expedition Musher Program offers participants the chance to complete the iconic journey to Nome with enhanced support while remaining separate from the competitive field.

The program was developed to provide a pathway for accomplished outdoor adventurers, endurance athletes, explorers, and experienced mushers who may not be pursuing a competitive racing career but still dream of traversing Alaska’s most famous trail with a dog team.

“The Iditarod has always represented far more than a race—it is one of the world’s last great wilderness expeditions and a testament to resilience, partnership, and exploration,” said Rob Urbach, Chief Executive Officer of the Iditarod Trail Committee.  “The Expedition Musher Program creates a new pathway for experienced adventurers to fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling this legendary trail while preserving the traditions and values that define the Iditarod. By welcoming explorers from around the globe, we are not only expanding access to this extraordinary experience but also building new ambassadors for Alaska, sled dogs, and The Last Great Race® for generations to come.”

Expedition Mushers travel behind the competitive field and work closely with race officials to develop a customized expedition plan focused on safety, dog care, logistics, and successful completion of the trail. Participants receive extensive support from the Iditarod, including checkpoint access, logistics assistance, GPS tracking, media coverage, and recognition upon completing the journey in Nome.

Unlike traditional race entrants, Expedition Mushers are not competing for prize money or official race standings. Instead, the focus is on completing one of the world’s most challenging and rewarding wilderness expeditions while upholding the highest standards of dog care and trail stewardship.

The program is designed to be highly collaborative, with race officials, veterinarians, support personnel, and participants working together to create an experience tailored to the individual Expedition Musher’s goals and capabilities.

Applications for the 2027 Expedition Musher Class will be available beginning June 22. Prospective participants will be asked to submit information regarding their mushing experience, expedition background, training plans, support structure, and motivation for undertaking the Iditarod journey.

The Iditarod anticipates accepting a limited number of Expedition Mushers each year to ensure personalized support and maintain the highest standards of safety and race operations.

Individuals interested in learning more about the Expedition Musher Program are encouraged to contact the Iditarod Trail Committee for additional information and application materials.
