Iditarod Celebrates Legacy with Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction

The Iditarod Trail Committee is proud to announce the inaugural induction into the Iditarod Musher Hall of Fame, taking place at the Legends of Iditarod Gala on Thursday, October 23, at 6:00 p.m. at the Alaska Aviation Museum.

This milestone event will celebrate the people and dogs who have defined Alaska’s greatest tradition — the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The Inaugural Hall of Fame Class features six legendary mushers whose achievements, perseverance, and pioneering spirit have forever shaped the trail: Rick Swenson, Libby Riddles, Susan Butcher, Martin Buser, Jeff King and Lance Mackey.

The Iditarod Trail Committee is also proud to honor the Founders Class of the Iditarod Hall of Fame, celebrating the visionaries, pioneers, and dedicated individuals whose passion and commitment laid the foundation for The Last Great Race®Joe Redington, Sr., Dorothy Page, Dave Olson, Gleo Huyck, Tom Johnson, Dan Seavey, Dick Wilmarth, Herbie Nayokpuk, Lolly Medley, Jim Brown, Mary Shields, Larry Thompson, Howard & Julie Farley, Pam Randle, Tom Mercer and Raine Hall.

Together, these icons embody the endurance, sportsmanship, and heart at the core of The Last Great Race®, and their legacies now form the foundation of this new Hall of Fame tradition.

Guests of the evening will enjoy:

  • A welcome reception among Iditarod legends, heroes, and supporters

  • A plated dinner catered by The Bridge Company

  • The official Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, honoring the inaugural class

  • A live auction featuring unique items and experiences

“This Hall of Fame allows us to preserve and honor the legacies of mushers and dogs who have given everything to the trail,” said Iditarod CEO Rob Urbach. “We are excited to share this historic evening with our community, supporters, and fans of the race.”

As a fundraising event, the Legends of Iditarod Gala will directly support The Iditarod’s mission to safely stage the annual race, promote and uphold the highest standards in canine care, and develop creative educational programs for students from Kindergarten through college. Just as importantly, the Gala serves as a cornerstone for preserving the history of the Iditarod by formally recognizing the individuals whose contributions have shaped the race and inspired generations.

By honoring these legacies, the Hall of Fame not only celebrates the past but also ensures that the enduring spirit of the Iditarod continues to educate, inspire, and connect people well into the future.
