While no cases of the Coronavirus (“Covid 19”) have been identified in Alaska at this time the Iditarod is striving the ensure that its community is informed. The most effective preventative measures are the same as with any cold or flu virus and include:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
- Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
With regard to COVID-19 specifically, the Iditarod has reached out to the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services in order to better communicate to our volunteers, mushers, and race fans what steps are being taken. We want to make sure you have the same information that is being provided to Alaska’s health care providers at this time:
- The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has extensive resources that can inform you about how COVID spreads, and what to do if you are sick.
- Testing for novel coronavirus is now available at Alaska Public Health Read the recent DHSS press release for more information.
- Please check the DHSS Human Coronavirus website and the CDC COVID-19 website for the latest
The Iditarod will continue to update you with regard to COVID-19. Whether you are a competitor, a volunteer on the trail, or a community member on the trail, be proactive, and protect yourself.
