Eye on the Trail: Feeding the Volunteers

There are so many contributors to The Last Great Race®, it would be an impossible feat to make an accurate list.  People contribute in the most incredible ways.  It’s not just helping the mushers or the dogs, it’s also helping the volunteers.  Contributing toward the well being of the volunteers certainly comes full circle back to the mushers and the dogs.

Take for example the contributions that have been made toward feeding the enormous corp of volunteers in Nome.  The Nome volunteers partake in meals at the Methodist Church.  That’s also where the volunteers sleep.  There are two cooks on hand to prepare three square meals each day.  Most volunteers can find time in their work schedule to make breakfast, lunch and supper.  For those who are schedule over a meal time, there is take out.

The matriarch of dining for Nome volunteers, Debski, had a number of “thank you” cards out for people to express their gratitude for special items that had been donated for the Nome Volunteers.  Curious, I asked Debski to give me a run down of all the special treats people had sent.  So, here’s a “thank you” from me too.

Prepared and ready to bake cookie dough came in two excellent and popular varieties – Debbie Filter sent out Oatmeal Chocolate Chip dough and Ronnie Adams provided Peanut Butter dough for Debski to thaw and bake.

Vander Wheel Farms of Palmer provided 150 pounds of potatoes  and 25 pounds of carrots.  Both are much appreciate by volunteers who like fresh vegetables.

Jerry Trodden of Anchorage, who is a Nome Communications volunteer, has provided wild salmon and a very large frozen turkey.  We are really looking forward to salmon night and the night we have our Thanksgiving meal.

Many dozen eggs were provided, nineteen to be exact.  Not just the usual white eggs or brown eggs but pretty eggs in a rainbow of pastel colors.  These eggs were carried to Nome by Debski.  I heard it took her a very long time to get through passenger screening with all those eggs in her carry on.  Derek and Vickey from Not so Old McDonald Farm in Talkeetna contributed eggs along with Aimee Beech of Palmer and Sariah Asher of Talkeetna.

It’s St. Patrick’s Day so folks are wearing green in Nome.  Never did I dream the egg that I’d have for breakfast would be one from a pretty pastel green shell, but it was 😉

Many thanks to all of the generous providers who through their gifts made volunteer meals extra special.
