F8 and be there. Jeff Schultz, Official Iditarod Photographer, lives by the mantra. He even sports the idea on his vehicle license plate. Schultz has photographed thirty-six iditarod races. He’s seen all sorts of weather conditions, all sorts of trail conditions and has even survived a plane crash on the trail. Jeff shared his thoughts on the art and science of photography with the teachers. Whether a person uses a smart phone, tablet or high end DSLR there are basic composition techniques that make for interesting pictures – tell the story utilizing small, medium and large frames, catch the decisive moment, apply the rule of thirds and use leading lines to take the eye into the frame of the photo.
The educators are gathering ideas for using the theme of Iditarod in teaching language arts, math, science, social studies, geography, health, music, art, engineering, technology and character. They’ll go back to school in the fall with a sled full of tools for motivating students. Watch for more Telephoto Stories this week from Iditarod Summer Teacher’s Camp.
