2024 Iditarod Design – Statewide Art Contest

Monday, May 1, 2023 – Friday, June 30, 2023

The Iditarod is happy to announce its first ever Official Race Design Art competition, taking place from Monday, May 1, 2023 through Friday, June 30, 2023.   We encourage artists from across the State of Alaska to submit their entries for the 2024 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race®.

Thank you to all of our participants in the inaugural Iditarod Design Art Contest!  We received some incredible entries and the public finished voting on July 7th to determine the Top 10.  The winner will be announced to the public on July 31st, so keep your eyes peeled!

Here is our Official 2024 Iditarod Design, created by Cindy Pendleton!   Read the full release by clicking here.

As voted by Iditarod Nation, here were the Top 10 Finalists of the 2024 Art Contest!

The rules and guidelines for this contest are as follows:

  • The Work Must Be Original: You must be the creator of the art that you submit to the competition. Your art must be your own original concept and not a copy of anyone else’s copyrighted material (if your image infringes upon another’s copyright it will be disqualified.) Upon submitting your work to this competition, you are solely responsible for any infringement on copyrighted materials.

  • 1 (one) entry per participant.

  • Open to Alaska Residents only.   Valid proof (Alaska Drivers License, Photo ID, Learners Permit) will be required for the Top 10 participants.  If under the age of 18 without proof of residency, a parent/guardians proof of residency will suffice.
    • We understand this may be disappointing for some, but as this is the first year of its inception we have no idea the volume of entries we will receive. This and other aspects of the contest may change in the years to follow (as I am sure we will learn a lot in this first year), but for now we wanted to keep it statewide as we gauge interest level and learn this new process.   Additionally, we thought it would be special for the winner of the inaugural design contest to be Alaskan, representing The Last Great Race® from The Last Frontier.

  • This art contest is open to any artist who works in our accepted mediums, which are both digital and physical medium

  •  Typeset:  Submitted artwork is to display the main art focus/design, no type.  The Iditarod Trail Committee reserves the right to include some/all of the following text to the winning design: 2024, Iditarod, Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race®, The Last Great Race® The Last Great Race on Earth®.    Contest winner agrees to the Iditarod’s copyright and/or trademark symbols being added to the artwork in compliance with guidelines.

  • Copyright & Non-exclusive Permissions: By entering this art competition, you are granting us a non-exclusive perpetual license to reproduce images of your artwork on our website, in our print media, newsletters, exhibits, website, print collateral, display images, and/or any additional event promotional materials, in the marketing of future art competitions to the general public. Each entry may be featured for historical / archival purposes.  Indefinite permission is not limited to approved Iditarod partners use of the design for all/any of the aforementioned purposes.

  • Printed Materials & Promotional Products:  I understand that this artwork will be going on a multitude of promotional products, many of which have different printing guidelines and processes.  While some items may offer a full color process, others may only offer a 1 or 2 color process.   All entries acknowledge that if their artwork is selected, alternate versions may need to be made for specific printable items.

  • Original Work: We reserve the right to request proof that your entry is your original artwork created solely by you. Non-compliance to this rule will be a disqualification of your entry. AI generated works will not be accepted in this competition.

  • Acceptable File Formats:  Artwork must be sent in high resolution format:  TIF, PDF or JPG at 300dpi at the final print size.  If your art is selected and was created digitally, we will require the design in its original format with layers in tack.

  • Submission Deadlines: Artwork may be submitted up until midnight Pacific time on the last day of the submission schedule posted. No artworks will be accepted past the posted deadline.  The submission period will start on Monday, May 1, 2023 and last through Friday, June 30, 2023.

  • Contest Winner:    Contest winner agrees to forfeit the rights to reproduce images of the selected artwork in print media, newsletters, exhibits, print collateral, display images, and/or any additional event promotional products and promotional materials.

The winner of the 2024 Iditarod Art Contest will have the opportunity to add their signature or name credit in the artwork at the ITC’s discretion of size/placement.    Unless the chosen winner declines, the Iditarod Trail Committee will produce and distribute a press release featuring the artist and their winning entry, which will also be promoted throughout Iditarod mediums (social media, newsletters, etc.).

  • The winner of the 2024 Iditarod Art Contest will receive:
    • $250 Cash Prize
    • One (1) of each item their artwork is produced on for the 2024 race (ex.  hat, shirt, sticker, pin, DVD, etc.)
    • Interview with ITC Staff to be aired on Iditarod mediums (social media, website, etc.)
    • Press Release about the artist and their winning design
    • Two (2) tickets to the 2024 Mushers Banquet in Anchorage, Alaska
    • Two (2) VIP passes for the Ceremonial Start & Restart

  • How is the winner determined?
    • If more than 10 entries are submitted, we will put a poll out to the public to pick the Top 10 finalists for the art contest.  Once the Top 10 finalists have been determined, those entries will go in front of the Iditarod Art Contest Committee to determine the winning design of the 2024 contest.
      • IIn this case, voting will start on Monday, July 3, 2023 and announced via email and Iditarod’s social media outlets throughout the voting period, which will end on Friday, July 7, 2023. The winner of the contest will be notified on Monday, July 17, 2023.
