While we were waiting for Brent Sass to come in, Mitch Seavey was changing runner plastic. I joked: ” What vitamins are you taking to keep up with these young guys? ” Mitch answered that he is feeling his age right now, ” If I am not going to win this thing, its not because I didn’t try hard “.
Brent Sass came, loaded up supplies and left the checkpoint. The veterinarians were commenting on how great his team looks. Some of Brent’s dogs were jumping up in the air. All eyes were on the outbound trail, not to the checkpoint. When it came time to pull the hook, Brent’s team charged down the hill out of the checkpoint. Koyuk bound. Brent did not pack any straw. His runtime over here was about 1hr slower than Dallas Seavey. That being said, all of those runtimes are VERY fast compared to other years. 4hr 56 min for Dallas and 5 hr 50 min for Brent. Mitch Seavey, although coming off a longer run, was only 1 minute slower than Dallas. Time will tell if Dallas Seavey will use his straw and camp out at the shelter cabin ” at the point ” or try to go all the way to Koyuk too.
