Once again I was a bit too slow to see Hugh Neff coming off the river. He was repacking his sled right in front of the checkpoint. His team is only 8 dogs strong. They look good with nice weight on them. Driving a smaller team does not leave much room for error, yet it has the advantage of less dogs to worry about and dog chores being done much quicker. Hugh drove 8 dog for much of the last half of the Yukon Quest. He is comfortable driving a small team, yet still competing, which this move through Kaltag shows. While Hugh was packing, Robert Sorlie delivered his return bag to the checkpoint. With 15 dogs on the gangline, Robert has almost double of Hugh’s dog power, but also a lot more work to take care of his large team.
I am going to be heading down the trail soon. I heard someone is frying burgers here in town, so first I have to check that out.
Here some pictures of Hugh’s team
