Biography

Kevin Hansen, 35, (Rookie) an Iñupiaq Alaska Native, was born and raised in Kotzebue, Alaska, where his parents ran a small sled dog kennel. He now owns Hansen Racing Kennel in Kotzebue which has 24 dogs. Kevin’s races include the Kobuk 440 and Taaqpak 120. He ran in local sprint races as a junior musher and ran his first distance race in 2017. Kevin says, “my dad, Paul Hansen, has taught me everything I know. He has a long history with sled dogs. He ran multiple Kobuk 440 races and finished the Iditarod at nearly twice my age. I have a lot of respect for, and have learned from many different sled dog mushers.” With so many great dog mushers and teams originating in Kotzebue and the Northwest Arctic Region, Kevin acknowledges Ken Anderson as a close mentor and friend of the family. Kevin is looking forward to the Iditarod to travel across the state by dog team on historic trails, see new and unknown country, and get the chance to compete against the best teams in the world. Kevin, who wrestled from childhood through college, enjoys hunting, fishing, trapping, and camping. He works as a physical therapist.
