The Redington Mural

Reddington Mural Invitation-page-001

You’re invited to celebrate the Redington Mural, a 72-foot-long canvas with 220 photos. Thework not only showcases the life of Joe Redington Sr. but also the history of the Iditarod SledDog Race with checkpoints and standout mushers. Created by Photographer Kevin Smith.

Location:

Joe Redington Sr. High School, 10015 Redington Road (south on Knik-Goose Bay Road to mile 10), right on Knik Knack Mud Shack Road, left on Redington Road.

The creation of this mural was funded by the Alaska Percent for Art Program.  This program reserves one percent of the capital construction costs of public buildings for the acquisition and permanent installation of artwork — the Mat-Su Borough commissioned Anchorage photographer Kevin Smith for this project.

“I think it’s going to be really educational and inspirational for the kids,” said Redington principal Tom Lytle, who serves on the school’s Percent for Art committee.  (http://www.frontiersman.com/arts_entertainment/school-named-for-iditarod-founder-gets-mushing-mural/article_95d3a2ac-eca0-11e5-9525-d350ff0ea74c.html)

This mural hosts about 220 images from photographers including Smith and even Joe Redington Sr.

Members of the Redington family worked on the project to assist in sharing Joe’s story by identifying people, places, and dates associated with the images on the mural.
