Eye on the Trail: Photos by Poyzer – Deshka Start

With limited media being on the trail or in the checkpoints, Iditarod has Dave Poyzer taking photos and posting them to the Iditarod Photo Gallery.  His shots are well composed and provide the feel of action for race fans.  Thanks to Dave for doing a great job in bringing the race to fans through photos.  His pictures are worth a thousand words.

Riley Dyche grew up in Iowa.  His first encounter with sled dogs was in Colorado while pursuing a major in Outdoor Recreation.  Riley moved to Alaska and secured a job with Alaska Icefield Expeditions.  That led to handling dogs for Matt Hall, Ryne Olson and Sven Haltman – all Iditarod Veterans.  Dyche established Dark Horse Racing Kennel in 2016.  He competed his rookie Iditarod in 2020 finishing in 25th place.

Jeff Deeter competed his rookie Iditarod in 2008.  After analyzing several years of Iditarod races and building is own kennel with his wife Katie-Jo, Jeff is back with a goal to run competitively.  In his previous two races, he’s made the finish in 15th and 16th place.  He plans to take his team to a more competitive finish in the years to come.  But what really matters to Jeff is experiencing the trail with his amazing dogs.

Ryan Redington says he has big shoes to fill considering the family history with Iditarod.  He’s had 14 starts with 6 finishes.  His best finish was let year in 8th.  Ryan is a lower 48 Beargrease Champion.  Redington is very supportive of junior mushers.  Morgan Martens from Brule Wisconsin ran Redington dogs is the 2021 Jr. Iditarod, taking first.  Julia Cross and Talia Martens have run Redington teams in previous years.  Ryan’s two young children are taking up the sport.
