Biography

Richie Beattie, 52, (Rookie) hails from Owosso, Michigan. Richie has a wife, Emily Rosenblatt, and a son, Osha. Richie races dogs out of Wildthingz Dog Mushing in Fox and Cantwell, Alaska, a 36-dog kennel. Richie has completed the Yukon Quest, Copper Basin 300, Two Rivers 200,T Dog 200, and Sheep Mountain 150. Richie’s entry into mushing was about “chasing a dream,” he says. “Back in the early 2000s when I was a young rookie musher and had just moved to Two Rivers, Alaska, Aliy Zirkle was a mentor of sorts helping me out with advice and info as I learned how to train and run dogs.” The lure of the Iditarod for Richie is the focus and commitment of training for the long haul, as well as being out on the land and “seeing the big wild country.” Richie adds, “It’s also about traveling and bonding with our dogs–all bred, raised and trained by us.” Off the runners, Richie pursues birding, biking, hiking, camping, and fishing, and “snuggling my amazing wife.” Riche works as a mushing guide.
