THE IMAGE

This  Official Iditarod Fundraising Print, entitled “The Spirit of Iditarod,” symbolizes so much of what the Iditarod represents:

  • The great silent spaces of wild Alaska that the Iditarod Trail runs through
  • The Spirit of Alaska’s indigenous peoples that have been one with ‘The Great Land’ ever since time itself was young
  • The Spirit of the Raven, which untold generations of Native elders, awed by the bird’s innate intelligence, have woven into legends of Creation, Wisdom, Special Powers, and Guidance
  • The Spirit of the Alaska Husky bonding with the musher is by nature intense. These dogs are a part of the wildness, but with the musher they are one together, sharing the freedom and exuberance  of the Iditarod Trail
  • And lastly, the Spirit of each Iditarod musher who helps to keep alive and vibrant, the Spirit that is the Iditarod

The three ravens appear to be showing the way with their unique sense of Guidance. Along with the Raven Spirit Mask and the Native elder, they watch over the musher below. If we imagine the birds as representing three distinct generations of the Raven family winging their way together, we may derive a parallel to the three generations of the Seavey Clan, Dan, Mitch, and Dallas, past, present, and future. They have made their mark on the 42 year history of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, ensuring that the “Spirit of Iditarod” remains secure, and so the legend lives on. The Iditarod remains “The Last Great Race on Earth.”©

The Signatures

Each print has the signatures of  Dan, Mitch, and Dallas Seavey and the  Artist, James Havens.

Dan Seavey --- ITC Board Member 2010-2011Dan Seavey – Seward, AK

Dan, 76, brought his family to Alaska in 1963 to teach at Seward High School and began mushing that same year.  Dan competed in the first Iditarod, placing third.  “My interest in the historic trail began in 1963 when I was signed to teach Alaska History.  I was taken with the trail’s importance to Alaska’s early development and Seward’s vital role in that development.  This resulted in helping to stage the first Iditarod, running the first two races, founding the Seward Iditarod Trail Blazers, serving on the Iditarod Trail committee’s Board of Directors and on the board of the Iditarod Historic Trail Alliance.”  Dan’s most recent Iditarod completion was in 2012.  Dan and Shirley are the parents of three, Darian, Tracie, and Mitch.

MitchMitch Seavey – Sterling, AK

Mitch, 54, was born in Minnesota and moved with his family to Alaska in 1963. He began mushing in 1963. Mitch’s dad, Dan, ran the Iditarod in 1973 so Mitch decided he wanted to run the Iditarod someday. After running eleven Iditarods, Mitch won the race in 2004. He won the Iditarod again in 2013, thus becoming the elder statesman of Iditarod champions. Mitch says, “Running the Iditarod is a family tradition.” Mitch and Janine are the parents of four boys, three of whom have run the Jr. Iditarod and the Iditarod, Danny, Tyrell, and Dallas. The youngest, Conway, won the 2012 Jr. Iditarod. Mitch’s hobby is spending time with his granddaughters.

DallasDallas Seavey – Willow, AK

Dallas, 26, moved to Seward when he was five.  Dallas is a third generation musher who grew up helping his dad, Mitch, the 2004/2013 Iditarod champion, train his racing teams.  Dallas ran the Jr. Iditarod four times and in 2005, he became the youngest musher in history to run the Iditarod.  In 2009, Dallas and his own family moved to Willow to train their Iditarod team.  In 2011, he won the Yukon Quest and in 2012, he became the youngest Iditarod champion in history.  Dallas won the 2014 Iditarod and is the current race champion!  Dallas is one of the four mushers ever to hold a championship in both the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod.  Dallas and his wife, Jen, also an Iditarod veteran, are the parents of three year old Annie.  Dallas enjoys hunting, camping, and fishing.
