The Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC) is proud to announce the appointment of Dan Carter as Race Marshal for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race®. Carter is a 2007 Iditarod veteran with a decade of experience as a professional musher. His background in sled dog sports includes guiding expeditions and competing in mid-distance, long-distance, and stage-format races across North America. In addition, he brings fourteen years of experience directing and managing sled dog sporting events.
Carter has spent the past four years serving as an Iditarod race judge—an experience he describes as “the ultimate backstage pass to the Iditarod” and one that he believes will be invaluable in his new leadership role.
“I’ve always had a passion for this race,” said Carter. “Running the Iditarod in 2007 was a culmination of everything I had worked toward as a musher, and staying connected to this community has always been important to me. I’m honored to step into the role of Race Marshal and support the race in a new way.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Dan Carter as Race Marshal for the 2026 Iditarod. With years as a Race Judge, experience as a musher, and a deep passion for the sport, Dan is perfectly suited to uphold the integrity, safety, and high standards of the race,” says Mark Nordman, Iditarod’s Race Director.
The Iditarod congratulates Dan Carter on his new role and looks forward to his leadership in the upcoming race.
