The front pack is dividing a little bit in three groups. Aliy Zirkle and Jeff King, who made some serious time on Aliy and then a bit of a gap and Martin Buser and Sonny Lindner are next. The third group is made up by both Dallas and Mitch Seavey and Aaron Burmeister. They are all having a solid run across Norton Sound. The trail is navigating around some pretty high pressure ridges, but other than that is a relatively nice trail, compared to some of the stuff which lays behind the teams. The ice coming into Koyuk is piled up high and the usual approach is impassable. So not only goes the trail zigzag over the ice, musher get treated a bit to ” tour de Koyuk ” before they arrive at the checkpoint. A new building went up right where the dogs used to be parked and the road in front of the checkpoint is a sheet of ice. Kim and Crew have worked tirelessly since they arrived here yesterday to set up the checkpoint. With having been drafted into that task last year, I know how much work it is.
Well, Jeff King was right behind Aliy Zirkle when they pulled in. He made up a lot of time.
