Biography

Mark Ibsen, 52, was born in Michigan. He was raised in Illinois and he graduated from Williams College and Washington University where he received his medical degree. He did his residency at the University of Utah. He's been a physician for the lat 27 years, and the last 11 years have been in Montana. Mark began mushing in 2001 and about three years ago the idea of running the Iditarod "just came to me." "I am entering the Iditarod to fulfill my vision. The dream of completing this race has been alive for me for the last 5 years. I have invested heavily in the sport of mushing, at it has, in turn, humbled me. I have a young dog team, a kennel of 26 dogs, mostly out of Jason Barron's lines. I enjoy the time I spend running with and training the dogs. I am learning to become a better organized musher, and am learning the leadership skills to forge a complete functioning team of dogs, people, and sponsors. I am grateful for every adventure that this sport has brought to me; I have truly grown through my participation." Mark is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He enjoys volunteer medical experiences, running and kayaking. He is the father of two, Grace, 11 and Alfred, 9.
