Apayauq ReitanHometown: Kaktovik, Alaska
I have been mushing since four years old at the tourism kennel my family had in Narjordet, Norway. I went to school in Norway and traveled to Kaktovik, Alaska in the summers. I ran the Femund Jr 220km twice when I was 15 and 16 years old. I ran qualifying races in 2017; the Knik 200, Copper Basin 300, Two Rivers 200 and Kobuk 440. I drove a snow machine to Nome then mushed our dogs from Nome to Kaktovik after my dad Ketil Reitan finished the Iditarod. It was nice to visit all the different villages along our route. I ran the Yukon Quest and Iditarod in 2019 as a rookie, the third person to run both 1,000-mile races in the same year as a rookie.
I spent a year at Sund Folk school for photography and have gone to the Norwegian School of photography for the past two years, hoping to make a living from photography and photo tour guiding. I am a captain of a polar bear viewing boat in Kaktovik.
