Hi Boys and Girls,
A couple of weeks ago I had to go to the Vet for my annual checkup. They weighed me, checked my heart and lungs, looked at my teeth, ears, eyes etc. Then I got a shot. I sure didn’t like that. If I’m good, and I was, I always get a yummy treat. I have this checkup every year to be sure I’m healthy. Did you know that every dog that runs the Iditarod must be checked out by a Veterinarian before they race? They are checked out to make sure they are healthy enough to run in the Iditarod. The musher has a choice of having this exam done by their own Veterinarian or they can chose to have the exam done the Wednesday before the race. That was yesterday.
The checkups are done at Iditarod Headquarters. Each dog is given an ECG to check for any heart abnormalities. Blood work is done. Vaccinations are checked to make sure they are up to date. The Vets also listen to the dogs lungs. Then a microchip is implanted into the dog. Once a dog is declared healthy, they are allowed to race. Sometimes something shows up that will keep a dog from racing. Usually it’s something minor but it’s decided that for this race and for the best interest of the dog, they shouldn’t race.
The Vet check at Iditarod Headquarters is open to the public. It’s a great opportunity for fans to see the dogs and meet the mushers.
Only two more days. Looks like everyone is ready to go!
See you on the trail.
