The letter “D” today was all about dogs! I had the pleasure of presenting about the race and its incredible canine athletes at Larson Elementary School in Wasilla. I was greeted immediately by the kindest people, instantly making me feel welcome. After some chitchat about how happy everyone is to have more daylight beginning to emerge, my day of excitement began. From kindergarteners all the way through 5th graders, I was able to share so much information about dogs, the determination of the mushers to complete this intense race, the dedication they show to raising and training their team, the difficult trail they encounter year after year, as well as how dependent dog and musher are on one another to complete this adventure together. One of my favorite encounters was with a darling little doting kindergartener who sweetly asked if she could kiss me on the cheek when I left. With a soft smile I said yes, and gave her a hug. How do you turn down such innocent tenderness? I guess you don’t. What a delightful day!
