It was the perfect day for the Junior Iditarod and the letter “F” too! Today I bring you friendships, Fahrenheit, flying, fatigue, and finishing! I am surprised every day as to how easily people welcome this newcomer and treat me so kindly. It is amazing to feel new friendships developing and to also watch the Jr. Iditarod competitors set aside the fact that they are racing against one another and instead, embrace friendship. Flying into Yentna today was a first for me and one I can’t wait to do again! I was amazed at how easy the plane lifted into the sky and how fantastic the views were. The temperatures did not get above 0 Fahrenheit, choosing to stay well below zero. We were having so much fun, laughing, talking, and getting to know one another, we hardly noticed. To see the smile on the Jr. musher’s faces as they finished half of the race was certainly a sight to see. There was so much pride in their faces at the accomplishment they had just completed. While it seems that we didn’t do much today, just being in the cold, the fatigue is settling in quickly and with a vengence. Tomorrow morning, bright and early, we will be making the return trip to see which musher will indeed finish on top. We will then celebrate each and every one as they cross the finish line!
Here’s a FINE activity for you to try out!
Lower Grades: Make a finish line/burled arch. Use 2 large marshmallows as the base. Attach the end of a pipecleaner into a marshmallow and bend into an arch shape. Add Cheerioes to the arch and secure with the second marshmallow base. You have a burled arch!
Upper Grades: Try out a lesson on converting Celsius to Fahrenheit and the opposite. Simply subtract 30 and divide by 2!
