Join the Iditarod Education Department in welcoming our 2025 Iditarod Teacher on the TrailTM, Maggie Hamilton, to the elite group of educators to earn this honor. After completing an involved and thorough application, and the selection process as a finalist in Alaska prior to this year’s race, Maggie accepted this year-long job. All finalists have an in-person interview, write daily website postings, attend and present at the EDU Winter Conference, volunteer for the race, and other tasks. She is the 26th Iditarod Teacher on the TrailTM.
Currently a 5th grade teacher in Mitchell, IN, Maggie has incorporated the race in math, reading, social studies and other academic areas. Her entire school uses the theme of Iditarod to motivate students to achieve their goals. With a passion for new opportunities and a dedication to education, Maggie inspires young minds through her diverse experiences and worldly perspective.
She says: I fell in love with the Iditarod at a young age. When I started teaching, I knew that I didn’t want to simply teach my students about the race, but I also wanted to weave the race throughout the curriculum in my classroom. Each year, my students enjoy learning about Alaska, dog sledding, and the Iditarod, especially since Alaska is vastly different from southern Indiana.
My husband and I have been married for 13 years and together we have built a life filled with happiness and adventure. We have two children. Cooper is 12 years old and has a deep love for nature. Our daughter, Kinzie, is 9 years old and is most content when she is reading. We have a lot of love for animals at our home with 3 dogs (mastiff, labrador, yorkie-poo), 3 cats, 16 chickens, and 2 turkeys. My family is quite fond of autumn, snow, hunting, fishing, and traveling.
I am extremely excited about being selected as the 2025 Teacher on the Trail™ and I can’t wait to share my journey and passion for the Iditarod with students and educators around the world.
Look forward to seeing Maggie’s unique contributions to the EDU through her postings this summer after Kate Newmyer finishes her year as the Iditarod Teacher on the Trail.
