Meet the 2027 Teacher on the Trail™ Finalists

With the 2026 Iditarod around the corner, EDU is beginning to prepare for the 2027 race. Three finalists were chosen from the applications to vie for the position of 2027 Teacher on the Trail. The first step was completing and submitting the application, next they will meet us at the Winter Conference in Anchorage where they will share a presentation, learn Dog Handling skills, and work with Iditarod COMMS. After all of that, one of these amazing teachers will be chosen to represent Iditarod EDU as Teacher on the Trail.

Kari Lawson from Manchester, TN will be joining us for a second time as a finalist. Although she is recently retired, she leaves 26 years of teaching experience covering all levels of elementary education. Her mission is “Using Iditarod as a unique experience to motivate and inspire students and teachers throughout the school year.”

Tami Schoff from South Berwick, Maine is a 6th grade Language Arts teacher. With 30 years of teaching experience Tami hopes to “inspire a new generation of mushers or Iditarod fanatics.”

Danielle Mummelthei is a 4th grade teacher from Waverly, IA. She states, “I have developed a passion for and built a six-week curriculum around Alaskan history, geography, and the Iditarod.”

We welcome these teachers to our Iditarod EDU family!
