Biography
Ryan Redington, 43, (Veteran) was born Anchorage, Alaska. He is married to Sarah Keefer and they have three children: Raynee, Eve, and TJ. Ryan’s Kennel is Redington Mushing in Knik, Alaska, home to 60 dogs. In addition to 18 Iditarod finishes and one championship, Ryan’s other races include the Kobuk 440, John Beargrease Marathon, Northern Lights 300, Copper Basin 300, Tustumena 200, Kuskokwim 300, UP 200, Knik 200, and the Pedigree Stage Stop Race. Mushing is in Ryan’s blood. “Born into mushing royalty, I am the proud grandson of Joe Redington Sr., the “Father of the Iditarod,” and great-grandson of Frank Ryan, an Inupiaq musher from Unalakleet who delivered mail by dog team to surrounding villages. I grew up immersed in sled dog culture, and began mushing my own teams as soon as I could hold onto the sled.” Ryan credits his grandpa, Joe Redington Sr., his dad, Raymie Redington, his uncle Joee Redington, and his brothers Ray Jr. and Robert for being mushing mentors and heroes to him. Ryan says, “In addition, my mushing heroes include Charlie Boulding and Herbie Nayokpuk.” Ryan enjoys the challenges of the trail and meeting the people in the villages along the way. When he’s not mushing, Ryan’s favorite activities include fishing, hunting, and antiquing. A big part of his mushing identity is advocating for the sport of sled dog racing.
