Expedition Musher

Hello friends,

Expedition Musher Kjell Inge Rokke Completes Iditarod Trail (Photo: Iditarod Media)

This year the Iditarod introduced a new category for mushers, the Expedition Class. These mushers are not actually competing, but riding with some experts for the experience of completing the Iditarod Trail. You may have noticed on the tracker that Kjell Inge Rokke seemed to be in the lead. True, he was ahead of the competing mushers, but he wasn’t competing. He was also not eligible for any of the special prizes along the trail (so far most of those have gone to the true leader, Jessie Holmes). It wasn’t a free for all for him, there were still rules to follow. “Expedition mushers operate under Race Official oversight, adhering to strict dog care and safety standards. They may receive outside assistance, swap dogs, and take flexible rest periods — all permitted under this special designation. Every dog is subject to pre-race and on-trail veterinary protocols, with final authority resting with the official Iditarod veterinarians.” Like always, it’s all about the dogs.

Rokke made history being the first Expedition musher to cross the finish line in Nome. What an experience for him and his K9 friends!

NOW – it’s time for the competitors on the trail to head to Nome. Jesse Holmes seems to have a commanding lead, but this is the Iditarod, anything can happen. We expect the winner to cross under the Burled Arch in Nome Tuesday or Wednesday. Keep watching!

Tail wags,
