Junior Iditarod

Hello Friends,

There are a lot of activities around the Anchorage area leading up to the Last Great Race. One event is the Junior Iditarod. This is a 150 mile race for young people 14 – 17 years of age. The race begins on Knik Lake and ends at the Willow Community Center.  The halfway point is Yentna Station where the young mushers have a mandatory layover of 10 hours.

Katherine Winrich from Reedsville, Wisconsin awaits the start of the 2017 Junior Iditarod.

There were 13 adventure seeking young people in this year’s race. Most of them were from Alaska, but 1 was from Canada and 3 were from the lower 48 – Idaho, Wisconsin, and Michigan. BowWow! It takes a lot of preparation and determination to run in the Junior Iditarod. Congratulations to Andrew Nolan who won this year’s Junior Iditarod with Hannah Mahoney taking the Red Lantern Award.

All of the K-9 Reporters here at Iditarod Headquarters are proud of your accomplishment of competing in the 2017 Junior Iditarod.

Tail wags,

Zuma
