Hello friends,
Putting on a big race like the Iditarod takes a lot of “behind the scenes” work. Our human friends have been putting in many hours trying to make the 2017 Iditarod another successful race.
I recently stopped in at the Airland Transport Warehouse in Anchorage, AK where people were pitching in to prepare straw. Yes straw. I know you humans prefer comfortable mattresses with sheets and blankets, but what we dogs love after a long run is to lay down in a soft pile of straw. Coming into a checkpoint our musher will grab a bale of straw and spread it out for us. After turning a few circles, we lay down and tuck our noses into our bushy tails. For the 2017 race, volunteers prepared 1,635 bales of straw. BowWow! That’s a lot of straw. Bales will be delivered to each checkpoint by volunteer pilots of the Iditarod Air Force. Thanks volunteers for all you do!
Tail wags,
Zuma
