The 54th Iditarod Sled Dog Race is in full swing. As of this writing, team Jesse Holmes is in the lead with team Paige Drobny following closely in their dog tracks. This is a true lead as all the teams have taken their 24 hour layover so times are now adjusted.
As you know, there are mandatory items that teams need to carry on the trail. Rule #16 gives a list of all mandatory items including sleeping bag, snowshoes, axe, etc. Also on that list is any promotional material provided by the ITC. First of all ITC stands for Iditarod Trail Committee, second of all, promotional material includes Trail Mail. If your family, class or school purchased Trail Mail, it is officially tucked into the team’s sled and is heading to Nome. Since it gets so wet in the sled, the mail has been securely bundled and vacuum sealed. Our Teacher on the Trail, Kari Wright, personally delivered the mail to each musher.
