March 13, 2017 Evening Update

Hi Boys and Girls,

The teams seem to be playing leapfrog down the trail. The lead teams will be into White Mountain soon. There they will take their mandatory 8 hour rest and then on to Nome. So when do you think the winner will reach Nome? I think Wednesday. The big question is “ Who will get there first?”

Who’s In First

As of 14:30, the lead has changed again. Mitch left Koyuk an hour and eighteen minutes ahead of Dallas. The top 5 have remained the same, just changed places. Mitch, Dallas, Nicolas and Joar have left Koyuk and Wade is in Koyuk along with Jessie Royer who is in 6th place.

  1. Mitch Seavey
  2. Dallas Seavey

  4. Joar Leifseth Ulsom
  5. Wade Marrs

Question of the day

On a dog team, every dog has a job. There are 4 different positions a dog can be in. Do you know what those positions are?

Answer to previous question

Mushers have to take care of themselves out on the trail. They eat food they have packed. Many mushers bring some of their favorite foods. They cook it and then freeze it for the trip. On the trail or in the checkpoints, they heat up their cookers and then their food- only after they feed the dogs! Several checkpoints offer showers, meals, and an inside place to sleep. Of course their first priority is their dogs. Once the dogs are taken care of, they take care of themselves. They will also pack human snacks, music to listen to, a few clean clothes and personal items.

Look for the teams to start arriving into White Mountain sometime tomorrow. Then after resting, it’s only 70 miles to Nome. Just an early reminder- There are 68 teams out on the trail. The Red Lantern Winner will probably not arrive into Nome until Sat. or Sunday. The race does not end until all teams are into Nome.

Have a great evening.

See you on the trail,

Gypsy
