On the way to breakfast this morning, Handler got to share the sidewalk in downtown Anchorage with some four-legged critters. Considering it’s the day before Iditarod, it’d be logical that the critters were sled dogs. Logical isn’t always correct. The critters that crossed the road and headed to the McDonalds drive-thru were moose!
It really depends on the amount of snow as to whether moose will be a problem for mushers and teams on the trail. In the years that there is a great amount of snow so it’s hard for the moose to move around, they are more likely to travel on the hard packed trails. Other years when there is little snow, they can navigate with little trouble anywhere they wish. A moose can’t tell the difference between a team of nice friendly sled dogs and a pack of hungry wolves. It will defend itself vigorously against either. When a team encounters a moose on the trail, it’s wise to give it a wide berth.
Stay tuned for another telephoto story tomorrow.
