A Great Day in Tanana

Tanana has been such a welcoming community since the minute my plane landed.  Upon arrival Shannon, a wonderful local woman, picked a small group of us up and brought us to the community center.  On our drive in she pointed out where the Native Hospital used to be, where the local store is, and pointed out both churches in town.  Once I got inside the community center, there was a table full of food!  These villages are making sure no one goes hungry, and it so greatly appreciated.

Since about 6:45PM mushers have been coming into the checkpoint.  Nick Petit was the first one in so he received a delicious meal made by chefs from the Lakefront Hotel in Anchorage (the Lakefront is Iditarod Headquarters during the race).  Nick shared his meal with one of the local elders, and one of the veterinarians got to enjoy part of it as well.

Many teams are parked now, and the mushers are inside warming up and getting some sleep.  Outside the village is still packed with volunteers and locals taking in the “Last Great Race on Earth”.  There is a big campfire just off the river, which is keeping many people warm.  I loved standing around the fire listening to stories from the locals and watching the kids play in the snow (even at 30 below zero).

Overall it was a wonderful second day on the trail!
