Miles from Checkpoint to Checkpoint:
You will often hear that The Last Great Race® is 1,049 miles. Last = One of the last wildernesses or untamed ‘lands’, unexplored places. Great = something large, for example, more than 1000 miles. The number 49 to represents Alaska being the 49th state. 1,049 is considered the traditional or historical length of the race. In reality, it is about 1, 049 from Anchorage to Nome. View this chart which provides information on distances from checkpoint to checkpoint.
